He is frequently brought in by other attorneys and judges to mediate or arbitrate significant disputes in areas including agri-business, commercial finance, closely held business disputes, and governmental matters.

Nationally, Larry is a sought after speaker and regularly presents at a number of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) programs throughout the country on a wide variety of topics including commercial and agri-business, commercial finance, creditors’ rights, government development, contracting, and financing.

Larry is a frequent presenter and trainer to financial institutions and governmental entities on creditors’ rights, lien perfection and priority, documentation, and land use and development.

Raised in Victoria, Minnesota, Larry received his B.A. in Business Administration from Creighton University and his J.D. from Creighton University Law School. He joined Melchert Hubert Sjodin in 1979.

Larry serves financial institutions in the areas of commercial and residential development as well as credit restructuring. In the area of finance, Larry represents a variety of lenders in negotiating and documenting:

Larry understands the issues from both sides: serving the secured lender in the workout of a loan and that transaction’s impact on individual cities, counties and municipalities. He has advised lenders and governmental entities in loan workout insolvency, restructure, and foreclosure and collection of troubled loans.

He served as vice chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Business Law Section Subcommittee on Agri-business and Agri-business Financing.

Counties and Municipalities

Larry has a strong focus representing counties and municipalities on challenging issues — the more complex the issue, the better. From state-wide property tax litigation to understanding the interplay between developers, lenders and the government, Larry has a unique skill set. He has extensive knowledge regarding development rights, governmental rights, and the process of governmental funding as it relates to commercial and residential development, as well as public improvement projects.

  • Property Tax Disputes.  Larry represents counties in complex property tax disputes and is among a handful of Minnesota attorneys who regularly serve as Special Counsel to counties in this area. He is an advocate for governmental entities to protect taxpayers from risk of loss in the build out and continued investment in the community’s infrastructure.

He has represented counties in substantial cases involving complex properties which have established significant precedent in Minnesota.
